Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are one of the main pillars of Indonesia’s economy, contributing more than 61% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2023 while also playing a vital role in employment absorption and equitable development, particularly in rural areas. However, a persistent challenge remains in the aspect of business legality, especially the possession of a Business Identification Number (NIB), which serves as an essential requirement for gaining access to financing, expanding market networks, and enhancing the competitiveness of local products.¹
The community service program through Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) of Universitas Islam Indragiri in Sungai Luar Village was designed to address the issue of weak business legality among MSMEs by providing assistance in the form of socialization, technical guidance, and facilitation of Business Identification Numbers (NIB). The program applied a participatory method involving students, the village government, and local entrepreneurs, and successfully resulted in the issuance of NIBs for sago cracker businesses and shrimp amplang producers. This achievement demonstrates that legality is not merely an administrative document, but an essential instrument for enhancing professionalism, strengthening competitiveness, and building the independence of MSMEs in facing market challenges.
