URGENCY OF SABĀB AN-NUZŪL FOR THE INTERPRETATION OF THE QURAN

Sabāb an-Nuzūl is a science that studies the historical background of the revelation of the verses of the Qur'an, which plays a crucial role in interpretation. This paper discusses the urgency of Sabāb an-Nuzūl as a means of understanding the contents of the Qur'an accurately and contextually. Without this discipline, an interpreter will be trapped in a literal understanding and deviate from the intent of the verses. Through a literature review, this study identifies several important functions of Sabāb an-Nuzūl in the interpretation of Qur'anic verses. These include avoiding misunderstandings regarding the limitations of a verse, eliminating ishkal, and preventing arbitrary interpretations of the Qur'an. Thus, it can be concluded that Sabāb an-Nuzūl is the key to unlocking an authentic understanding of Qur'anic interpretation, and ignoring it will result in distortion of meaning and distance from the main purpose of revelation.
